    Under the Radiant Hill

The northern parish of Assynt boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in Britain. The mountains of Quinag and Suilven dominate a very varied landscape with wild, white hills inland and a complex, intricate moorland to the west. Here, rocky crags, boggy flows, innumerable lochs and burns, stretch to a coast of equal variety with long fjords, high cliffs and sandy beaches. Close to many of the crofting townships are dense areas of native woodland. In this book, Robin Noble, who has been intimately involved with this corner of the north-west Highlands of Scotland his whole life, celebrates its rugged beauty and shares many intimate encounters with the resident wildlife – including, golden eagles, otters, badgers and pine martens – which surrounded his cottage in its wooded glen under the 'long mountain' of Quinag. Assynt is also well known for its important role in the history of community land ownership, and Robin describes too his deep involvement with those who live there. He learned much from the old generation of shepherds and crofters whom he got to know in the 1960s, as well as from their children and incomers in later decades, and shared with them the challenges of living in a remote, fragile community.

  • 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea | The Pink Classics
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea | The Pink Classics

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is a classic science fiction novel by French writer Jules Verne published in 1870. The novel was originally serialized from March 1869 through June 1870 in Pierre-Jules Hetzel's periodical, the Magasin d'Éducation et de Récréation. The deluxe illustrated edition, published by Hetzel in November 1871, included 111 illustrations by Alphonse de Neuville and Édouard Riou. The book was highly acclaimed when released and still is now; it is regarded as one of the premiere adventure novels and one of Verne's greatest works, along with Around the World in Eighty Days and Journey to the Center of the Earth. The description of Nemo's ship, called the Nautilus, was considered ahead of its time, as it accurately describes features on submarines, which at the time were very primitive vessels. Verne returned to the theme of an outlaw submarine captain in his much later Facing the Flag. That book's main villain, Ker Karraje, is a completely unscrupulous pirate acting purely and simply for gain, completely devoid of all the saving graces which gave Nemo--for all that he, too, was capable of ruthless killings--some nobility of character. Like Nemo, Ker Karraje plays "host" to unwilling French guests--but unlike Nemo, who manages to elude all pursuers, Karraje's career of outlawry is decisively ended by the combination of an international task force and the rebellion of his French captives. Though also widely published and translated, it never attained the lasting popularity of Twenty Thousand Leagues. More similar to the original Nemo, though with a less finely worked-out character, is Robur in Robur the Conqueror--a dark and flamboyant outlaw rebel using an aircraft instead of a submarine--later used as a basis for the movie Master of the World.

  • Under Fire
    Under Fire

During the Second World War all British citizens were called upon to do their part for their country. Despite facing the discriminatory 'colour bar', many black civilians were determined to contribute to the war effort where they could, volunteering as air-raid wardens, fire-fighters, stretcher-bearers and first-aiders. Meanwhile, black servicemen and women, many of them volunteers from places as far away as Trinidad, Jamaica, Guyana and Nigeria, risked their lives fighting for the Mother Country in the air, at sea and on land. In Under Fire, Stephen Bourne draws on first-hand testimonies to tell the whole story of Britain's black community during the Second World War, shedding light on a wealth of experiences from evacuees to entertainers, government officials, prisoners of war and community leaders. Among those remembered are men and women whose stories have only recently come to light, making Under Fire the definitive account of the bravery and sacrifices of black Britons in wartime.

  • Is sonar the same as radar?

No, sonar and radar are not the same. Sonar (Sound Navigation and Ranging) uses sound waves to detect and locate objects underwater, while radar (Radio Detection and Ranging) uses radio waves to detect and locate objects in the air or on the surface of the Earth. Both technologies serve similar purposes of detecting and tracking objects, but they operate using different types of waves and are used in different environments.

  • What is a flight radar?

A flight radar is a system that tracks and displays real-time information about aircraft movements in a specific region. It uses data from various sources such as radar, ADS-B, and MLAT to provide details like flight number, aircraft type, speed, altitude, and route. This information is typically displayed on a map, allowing users to track flights, monitor air traffic, and get updates on delays or diversions. Flight radars are commonly used by aviation enthusiasts, travelers, and aviation professionals to stay informed about the status of flights.

  • What is a precipitation radar?

A precipitation radar is a type of weather radar that is specifically designed to detect and measure the intensity of precipitation in the atmosphere. It uses radio waves to determine the location, movement, and intensity of rain, snow, sleet, or hail within a certain area. This information is important for weather forecasting, as it helps meteorologists track and predict the movement of storms and precipitation patterns. Precipitation radars are commonly used in meteorology, aviation, and hydrology to monitor and study precipitation events.

  • What is a radar shield?

A radar shield is a protective barrier or coating designed to block or reduce the detection of radar signals. It is used to prevent radar waves from penetrating or reflecting off an object, making it less visible to radar systems. Radar shields are commonly used in military applications to reduce the radar cross-section of aircraft, ships, and other vehicles, making them harder to detect by enemy radar systems.
